Point Profile: Wu Hu (Five Tigers)

Wu Hu is a group of five points on the radial aspect of the proximal segment of the palmar side of the thumb (if that makes little to no sense, that’s ok, just look at the picture).

We learned about this group of points as we studied the acupuncture system of Master Tung. This system generally uses distal points and imaging of the body to treat common ailments and Wu Hu has quickly become one of our favorite groupings for use in the clinic.

Each of the five points has a function. Wu Hu 1 treats pain and soreness of the fingers, rheumatoid arthritis, tenosynovitis, and headaches. Wu Hu 3 is effective for pain in the toes and headaches. Wu Hu 2 supports the functions of 1 and 3. Wu Hu 4 is used to treat pain in the top of the foot and the ankle and Wu Hu 5 treats heel pain. Together, these 5 points were originally described by Master Tung for treatment of “bone swelling in and throughout the entire body.” In clinical application they are needled to treat swollen, achy joints, toe pain, gout, and various types of arthritis. They are also incredibly useful in the treatment of autoimmune disorders.

Because of the location of Wu Hu, patients typically experience more of a sensation on initial insertion of the needle. That feeling, however, is temporary and the resulting benefit of a treatment using Wu Hu is well worth the momentary discomfort.
